In the early 1800’s, German immigrant Josef Heinhurst endures what God lays before him. He establishes a legacy that becomes a heritage of faith to future generations of the Heinhurst family.
The only son, Edzard, felt neglected with his father’s absence due to time spent on the farm and serving his church and growing into resentment and threatening the fulfillment of his grandfather’s legacy.
Recently ordained, Edzard and his young wife travel down the Ohio on a flatboat, across the Mississippi on a steamboat, and across three oceans on clipper ships to answer God’s call to the mission field.
Edzard, Dortha, and infant, Josie face drought, tribal wars, and slave trading in Ethiopia, immersing themselves in the customs and practices of primitive living. Not all were convinced that God is merciful and loving.
