The newly ordained Pastor Edzard and his young wife, Dortha take their providential journey to the mission field. Shawnee Indians peer over a ridge as they travel the Ohio River on a flatboat. Edzard protects his wife from drunken Paddle Boat crewmen. The couple performs a justifiable ruse, and Edzard assists in freeing slaves. They travel across three oceans on various clipper ships from multiple ports. Trials, angry waves, ill health, and disappointments strain their spirits, but not their resolve.
